How to apply

Academic Plan I (in senior year or post-baccalaureate)
Prospective students should apply to the dual degree program through AMCAS and should select the UTMB MD/PhD program. There are two MD/PhD programs associated with UTMB. The Combined MD/PhD program utilizes both medical and graduate schools at UTMB in Galveston, the Dual Degree Program utilizes the medical school training at UTMB and the graduate programs at UT-Austin. Upon completion of the AMCAS application,  you will be contacted by the program administrator and given the option of being considered by either of these MD/PhD programs or by both programs.

The UT Graduate School will waive the GRE requirement for students with a satisfactory score on the MCAT. However, the BME program has several supplemental fellowship programs that require GRE scores. To be considered for these fellowships, the GRE will be required.

Academic Plan II (concurrent with senior year prior to graduation)
To be considered for select admission to the joint MD-PhD program, students who expect to graduate from UT Austin in May or August of 2009 should apply no later than March 19, 2008 and have:

  1. GPA of 3.5 (or better) overall and in science and laboratory courses.

  2. A satisfactory score on the GRE or MCAT. If you have not taken either of these standardized tests, you must take the GRE by March 19, 2008. GRE online testing is available year round. UT-Austin campus site, 2616 Wichita Street (512-232-2643). Send official score report to: The University of Texas at Austin

  3. Three letters of recommendation. At least one letter should be from a research mentor that addresses your research progress and potential as a physician scientist.

  4. Statement of purpose: Explain why you desire a career as a physician scientist and how this dual degree program will prepare you to meet that goal.

An unsuccessful application to participate in the Academic Plan II does not preclude or prejudice subsequent applications to Academic Plan I or individual applications to UTMB Medical School or to UT Austin Graduate Programs.

CONTINUATION IN THE PROGRAM

Students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or better, and fulfill all requirements for graduation from UT Austin by August preceding fall matriculation at UTMB. Students must also achieve a satisfactory score on the MCAT in order to continue in the program and begin pre-clinical courses at UTMB in Galveston. The faculty committee will ultimately determine whether your score on the MCAT is satisfactory; however, under most circumstances a score of 30 or greater would be considered satisfactory.
